Backstage with the Phil had their first presentation Friday afternoon. The event, which will subsequently be held on Thursday afternoons for the rest of the season, provides interested music lovers a chance to hear a presentation about the upcoming weekend’s classical concert performances. The concerts present a wide variety of music for the Boise Phil’s 60th Season.
At the first event, Musical Director Eric Garcia talked about the upcoming event, including composer Adam Schoenberg’s Orchard in Fog, which will be performed by renowned violin soloist Anne Akiko Meyers. Maestro Garcia had previously explained about Orchard in Fog’s choice to The Boise Beat, saying that “Adam Schoenberg is one of the most vital and original voices in American music. Composed for internationally acclaimed violinist Anne Akiko-Meyers, Orchard in Fog is one of Adam’s most beautiful creations. We are thrilled to bring this exquisite music and an artist of Anne’s caliber to our community.”
Other pieces to be played at the opening night concerts include Rossini’s operatic masterpiece, the Overture from the Barber of Seville. The final portion of this concert will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, the Eroica Symphony. This was written just as Beethoven was losing his hearing; and shows his creativity and his desire to push on and persevere despite his looming loss. With Beethoven’s birth 250 years ago coming up during this season, it is a fitting way to pay tribute to a composer that really reshaped the face of music during his time. Judge Steve Trott delivered an interesting history of the symphony and it’s musical themes.
The season gets underway tonight in Nampa at NNU’s Brandt Center and Saturday at the Ann Morrison Center in Boise.
