I asked for artists to share their songs, their lyrics.
I have found that art can heal. By the words of artists – songwriters – readers can be encouraged. Listeners can be healed. New thoughts replace the sadness with righteous anger. A spark of hope is ignited and a flame begins to grow to warm the soul and brighten a life.
It is important to share our songs. We have an opportunity and responsibility to pass on what is given to us by the unseen. We are the crafters of the Muse’s gift. As we create from the pieces of the puzzle that becomes a poem and, for me, a song, we do a service for the Muse and our gratuity is beyond description. Only artists can know the feeling that is the reward of creativity.
I used to wonder how I could write about suffering and sadness and feel such enthusiasm, but then I realized that it is my pay for getting the word out to those who otherwise do not think about homelessness, or bullying or, in this case, mass murder as was the Las Vegas Massacre. We get the word out, help towards healing the hurt and empower the listener.
STRONGER IN THE END
by Walt Huntsman copyright 2017
Plenty of blame to go around
For the pain – when it goes down
Fingers point in all directions
Does it really matter who’s at fault?
‘Cause right now, we’ve got an open wound
And our emotions may be out of tune
Now’s not the time for accusation
It does no good to rub in salt
North and South, East and West
Our spirit’s being put to the test
But there’s one thing on which I know I can depend
We’ll come out stronger in the end
It may seem an uphill climb
Feel like we’re running out of time
But stronger than the things that divide us
Are the ties that bind
Gather your loved ones close
They are the ones you need the most
Take a moment to stop and look around
At all the blessings you possess
When the going seems a bit too tough
When life seems to get a bit too rough
Give thanks you made it through another day
That’s the meaning of success
North and South, East and West
Our spirit’s being put to the test
But there’s one thing on which I know I can depend
We’ll come out stronger in the end
I also wrote a song for my own healing. I was angry when I read the news.
Mine is an acoustic blues song. The Blues is often rooted in anger.
Here are my words:
LAS VEGAS MASSACRE
Words and music by Patti Jo Roth-Edwards copyright 2017
It’s a sad day in hell for the demons to play
We read in the news early today
They murdered so many and they need to pay
Enough is enough, need to do more then pray
The Las Vegas Massacre must be the last
Mr. Lawman, Mr. President, we’ve got your back
Color doesn’t matter; we’ll take our country back
I will fight for the Right to have liberty
Red, white and blue in the Land of the Free
They want to Resist, why not resist hate;
They are against what makes America great;
From sea to shining sea, there are people just like me,
Masses of millions just want to have peace.
We know who they are, they wear black masks and march,
Yell down the opposition and have hate in their hearts;
It’s way past time to call out their sin;
Mr. President, don’t let any more in.
Let’s sing out loud and get our guns;
Bullies are cowards and this will be fun;
Mr. Lawman, Mr. President, you work for us;
Round up the anarchists and lock them all up.
The Las Vegas Massacre must be the last
Mr. Lawman, Mr. President, we’ve got your back
Color doesn’t matter; we’ll take our country back
I will fight for the Right to have liberty
Red, white and blue in the Land of the Free
