The Red Light Garage in Wallace is a very interesting place to visit while in Northern Idaho. The Red Light Garage is owned by Jamie and Barbara Baker who purchased it in 2002 but the history in this quirky restaurant started way back in the 1890’s when it was known as the Star Brothel. Sometime in the 1940’s it was replaced by a 76 gas station included with a bus station. In the 50’s the present newer station was built with Exxon service, but only until the mid 1990’s when it was an auto repair shop, but then finally closed completely in 2001. Jamie and Barbara Baker purchased the existing garage building in 2002. Putting their ideas together they finally opened on July 3rd, 2004. The Red Light Garage remained the same garage with antiques on the car lifts in the area of the bays and they sold espresso in the office.
Progressing, they began by adding tacos and eventually selling ice cream. As time went by they continued adding more and more things and once when Jamie needed to plug a couple of holes in the ceiling he found a couple of Texas license plates and this “fix” continues to multiply to this day as visitors donate more license plates to fill any places of honor available, resulting in the more than 500 license plates from many foreign countries worldwide. Today the Red Light Garage in Wallace is proud to offer an excellent menu of breakfast specials including a Huckleberry pancake, omelets and a skillet breakfast. For lunch there is variety of hot dogs, tacos, nachos and assorted sandwiches. Also there are many (15) different hamburgers including the Blue Moon Burger and the Flying Saucer Burger named for the flying saucer replica in the parking lot…..Sterling
