Dr. Zhivago will be part of Hollywood Hits presented by the Boise PhilHollywood Hits presented by the Boise Phil is going to be an evening of much more than just movie music. Covering what many believe is the Golden Age of Film Music, the program is to be presented by the Boise Philharmonic and Musical Director Eric Garcia. The concert will be on Saturday, March 30 at the Ann Morrison Center. New and old, the concert showcases music that not only enhances the movies they were written for but also stands alone as great film music. As movies progressed, the film score became an important part of the production. Years later, some of the music is better known than the movies they were written for.

It’s hard to forget the strains of the music from Gone With The Wind as the tableau of the mansion and the Civil War unfolds. Other movies where the music needed to be as grandiose as the landscape will be performed such as Out of Africa. Plus the characters—-who can forget Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, Rocky, Dr. Zhivago and Laura? Even Scout and Atticus, one very young and one somewhat meek, get a wonderful score in the movie To Kill A Mockingbird.

Westerns played a big part in the history of the movies and many of the composed theme music had to be as grandiose as the characters the movies portrayed. Elmer Bernstein’s music is one of course, with his classic music from The Magnificent Seven, but the Boise Phil also will present How the West Was Won, Dances With Wolves and Silverado.

The future we might be interested to see is represented as these Hollywood Hits presented by the Boise Phil are performed. Star Trek: Into Darkness, is one such score, looking at the future as a musical Force. John Williams’ Raiders of the Lost Ark and Superman are more thematic music where it helps to create the larger-than-life characters. Or how about James Bond (Bond, James Bond….), whose music, even though different for each film, relies on that same iconic opening music theme. In their Best of Bond Suite, movies including Dr. No, Thunderbal l and Live and Let Die along with other Bond themes are presented.

Even love in its many ways has made it to the silver screen and also become great music, as shown in The Way We Were and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Henry Mancini, the composer of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, is well represented in the concert, also with his music for Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther. Finally, even if the movie is not familiar to them, most people have heard the famous ‘Col. Bogey March’ from The Bridge on the River Kwai. As the Hollywood Hits presented by the Boise Phil are played, it’s hard to find any of these movies where the music has not lived on as a classic in its own right.

To add to the evening, vintage images, film clips and movie trivia will be projected on-screen behind the orchestra during the concert. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be to be a guest on the music sound stage as great movie music was recorded, here’s the chance to see what it was like for these amazing Hollywood blockbusters.
