The original Fanci Freez in Boise and their location in Meridian have been serving up some pretty awesome milkshakes for a long time. Fanci Freez in Boise dates back to 1947. It is a small, classic period-looking location with plenty of outdoor seating only. Of course, in the present days of COVID, outdoor seating is preferable so it is a great place to go. Hand-painted signs and art adorn the classic building in Boise, including a nice ode to keeping a positive outlook this year.
There is a long list of shakes available at Fanci Freez in Boise. Along with their many listed combinations, you can add additional flavors or make it a malted for a small up-charge. There are four sizes available, from XS to L, so everyone can get the size they want. Along with the regular milkshakes, there is an interesting variation called the Boston Shake, which takes a milkshake and then pops a sundae on top of it. They also have sodas, plus a special series of flavored Fanci Sodas custom designed to give you plenty of variety with flavored syrups added to them. These sodas can also have ice cream added to them to make one-of-a-kind floats to enjoy.
I decided to try one of my childhood favorites candy bar flavors. I got a small Butterfinger Milkshake. It came nice and creamy, with a thick straw standing up in it. At first I was a little confused with the color, but then realized to my delight that they had added fresh huckleberries to it! The slightly tart huckleberries toned down the sweetness of the nice chunks of Butterfinger candy bar in the milkshake just enough to bring out the flavors even more of both. Having been a milkshake aficionado most of my life, I have to say this was easily one of the best shakes I have ever had. I found myself digging out every chunk and berry in the bottom of the milkshake. Next time I will order a bigger size!
Seeing how it was lunchtime, I decided to get a burger also. The sign in front at Fanci Freez in Boise mentioned that the Huckleberry Burger was a Fan Favorite and that piqued my interest. I’ve been a big fan of the Fresh Huckleberry French Toast at Terri’s Cafe in Meridian, so I thought I might give a burger with huckleberries a try. I asked, and they were indeed fresh huckleberries that Fanci Freez obtains. The gentleman at the window suggested cheese of course, but had an interesting suggestion. He thought that the blue cheese crumbles went especially well with the huckleberries. How could I resist a suggestion like that! It always makes sense to listen to the people who know.
There is plenty of table seating at Fanci Freez in Boise, as well as counter seating at what looks to be a rectangular fire pit. They also have a drive-thru and pickup available too. I grabbed a counter seat and very soon my name was called for the milkshake. A few minutes later the hamburger was ready. It was on a nice bun, with some thin sliced onion. You can also get lettuce on it. The patty had a nice sauce on it. The surprise of course was how well the blue cheese and the huckleberries went together. The tart berries in their sauce with the blue cheese made a delectable combination. I would certainly recommend this as a burger to try at Fanci Freez in Boise.
Fanci Freez in Boise certainly has some amazing milkshakes. I’ve been to the Meridian one in the past and can vouch for their ice cream cones too. Boise though is not a place trying to look like a malt shop from the 50s. It’s the real thing, and well worth a try for some of the most delicious milkshakes in Boise.
