Brother Brown's Underground Comedy Night Pork RibsBrother Brown’s Underground Comedy makes its debut Saturday night, July 17 at 8pm. Brother Brown's Underground Comedy Night PosterHosted by Reese Samuels, this show features some of the top comic talent from the Treasure Valley. Tanya Cope, Jeremy Nelson, Tina Townes, Dustin Chalifoux, Kat Lizarraga and LJ Sullivan are all aiming for your funny bone. The Brother Brown’s Underground Comedy Night will take place at Brother Brown’s Underground BBQ. Brother Brown’s is located in the basement of the El Korah Shrine Building in Downtown Boise. The El Korah Shrine is a classic building, built in 1913 for the long-time service and social group, famous for their Shriner Hospitals. The vibe is authentic, reminding one of an old time speakeasy. To top it off, the Oasis Bar will be open during the show, featuring a full line of cocktails, beer and wine.

Of course, when going to Brother Brown’s Underground, you’ve got to have some good barbeque too. Brother Carlas Brown, who is behind the tasty Brother Brown’s Underground BBQ, is serving a special barbeque dinner menu for the show. The menu, served from 5pm to 9:00pm, will be a Pulled Pork Sandwich with pickles and onion, OR a Bar-B-Q Chicken Sandwich, with creamy cole slaw and bodacious baked beans for $12 plus Idaho sale tax. You may also choose Brother Brown’s delicious Pork Spare Ribs (3 bones), collard greens, and country peppered potato salad for $15 plus Idaho sales tax.

One of the keys to Brother Brown’s Barbeque is the delicious BBQ sauce. Based on Brother Brown’s family recipe, the sauce has a hint of spiciness without being to hot for anyone. Going back to the days when his Uncle Tommy would make the BBQ for family events and passed down to Carlas Brown, this sauce is made in-house exclusively for Brother Brown’s Underground, as well as the catering side of Brother Brown’s Underground, which recently fed lots of hungry guests at the Weiser Fiddle Festival.

Reese Samuels is one of the producers of the inaugural Comedy Night at Brother Brown’s Underground. Reese is also the host of the show. Reese said, “This show is going to be absolutely amazing! Each comedian has their own style of comedy that’s thought provoking and hilarious. I can’t wait to have people experience this at Brother Brown’s Underground”. Reese recently played Boise’s Lounge At The End Of The Universe; and said, “I’ve traveled all over the North and Midwest. I’ve opened for Joel Kim Booster (Hulu) and Arlo Weierhauser (Late Show Stephan Colbert)”. She said about her shows, “My personal style of comedy is story telling with observational humor. I talk about the ups and downs of life and how crazy it tends to be”.

Joining Reese at Brother Brown’s Underground Comedy Night is a great line up of comedians. Tina Townes (she/her) is a half Filipino-half Black comedian, born and raised in Idaho. Tina is always trying to do better and be better. By retelling tales of her personal experiences of living in Idaho, she utilizes her persistent and comedic voice for anti-racism. She enjoys anime, comics, spending time outdoors and visiting locally owned food joints.

Tina said about herself, “I’ve been doing standup comedy on and off since late 2017. My style of comedy I guess would be story telling-ish. My life experiences are what influence my jokes. I’m very excited to be performing at Brother Brown’s Underground. Mr. Carlas Brown was a good friend of my late father. In fact if I remember correctly he was one of the first people that met my parents when they moved to Idaho in 1989. Carlas has been very kind and generous to me and my family since my dad’s passing. So I feel like putting on a show here and hopefully strumming up some business for his restaurant is a good way of saying thank you to him. His restaurant has a very unique vibe and I’m hoping it blends well with the comedy scene and become a ‘go to’ venue”.

Jeremy Nelson is looking forward to Saturday night’s show, and said, “I’m very excited to perform at Brother Brown’s Underground!” He said that “I bring a fun element of standup comedy with my storytelling being a combination of self observation, and my own life experiences”. Jeremy really has an interesting background, which he described by saying, “I’m a standup comedian from Boise, Id. I’m a former Professional Wrestler. I host my own podcast called “The Shuttle”.

Tanya Cope also has in interesting, roundabout way of getting into comedy. She described herself as, “A 50 year old divorcee and refugee from the corporate world. I have landed on my feet and grabbed a microphone”. Dustin Chalifoux wrote in his bio that “Dustin Chalifoux does not walk the thin line between genius and insanity. He is the thin line between genius and insanity. With an in your face blast of the bizarre, highly opinionated and free flowing style Dustin has been bringing thought provoking laughter throughout the Mid and Northwest for the past several years”.

Kat Lizarraga is also looking forward to the upcoming show, and said she is “Very excited! Comedy is greatest away from sunlight and light foot traffic. It’ll be a wonderful room, I’m excited for this to be my first show down there. And I was promised BBQ in payment”. Born in Los Angeles and based in Boise, she is a regular on the Boise comedy stages, including Comedyfort and the 208 Comedy Fest. Kat feels that, “My brand is confident disaster. I’m a mess,  but I’m comfortable and good at it. My jokes are mostly just weird stories and inside jokes I’m getting the audience to be apart of. But my favorite thing is talking to the audience. It’s authentic and unique to specific shows. And risky, you either succeed big or fail bug”. Kat does have a life away from comedy, adding that “I am a giant nerd. I play in a DnD live stream group called The BottleCap Brigade and in my spare time I sing songs to my dog or paint portraits of my dog. Either way, time well spent”.

LJ Sullivan is excited too about performing at Brother Brown’s, saying, “I’m very excited! I recently was introduced as a customer to Brother Brown’s by another comic on the show. From the first time I went down there I knew it’d be a great venue for comedy, comics love to be underground for some reason”. He came to Boise at an early age and grew up watching standup comedy becoming a staple of the Treasure Valley comedy scene. He said, “My comedy is a real yin-yang of goofy foolishness and hopefully some subtle but thought provoking points as well”. LJ reminded everyone, “If you come to the show or you’ve ever seen my comedy before and want to hear more from me, especially about pop culture and nerd news check out my podcast on Spotify ThatF*ckingPodcast”.

Brother Brown’s Underground Comedy Night has a $10 Admission. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com. Carlas Brown, owner and pitmaster at Brother Brown’s Underground BBQ, said that, “This is our initial comedy night and depending on how things go will continue to do it if it’s worth it and we can get the people out and they like it!”. With great BBQ and talented local comedians, it’s a sure bet that everyone will like it!
