Nashville\u2011via\u2011Miami quintet Pump Action blended Red Hot Chili Peppers\u2011style funk, Santana\u2011esque Latin grooves and pop hooks into one of Treefort\u2019s most dynamic sets.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Early on a Friday afternoon, the Cyclops Stage in Grove Plaza echoed with slap bass, tight drums and horns. The culprit was Pump\u00a0Action<\/a>, a band formed by University of Miami Frost School friends who now call Nashville home. Treefort\u2019s ability to spotlight up\u2011and\u2011coming artists from across the country was on full display as curious passersby stopped, listened and quickly became fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pump\u00a0Action\u2019s music defies easy categorization. Their sound melds funk, indie rock and R&B, prompting comparisons to a mash\u2011up of the Red\u00a0Hot\u00a0Chili\u00a0Peppers, Stevie\u00a0Wonder and Justin\u00a0Timberlake. The core lineup; vocalist David\u00a0\u201cLebo\u201d\u00a0Lehman, guitarist Isaac\u00a0Stallworth, bassist Nicholas\u00a0Wicelinski, drummer Xavier\u00a0Valdez and keyboardist Jon\u00a0Poindexter; released the EP Coronation<\/em> in 2022 and the single \u201cMaybe\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0You (Shroom\u00a0Riff)\u201d in 2023. They\u2019ve since been finalists for NPR\u2019s 2025 Tiny\u00a0Desk contest and even landed on ESPN\u2019s TikTok when a clip of their drummer went viral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On stage, Pump Action were equal parts musicianship and showmanship. Their Treefort set kicked off with a tight funk groove that had festival\u2011goers dancing within seconds. Lehman\u2019s powerful vocals slid between soulful crooning and rock belting, while Stallworth traded searing guitar licks with Poindexter\u2019s synth lines. During their Latin\u2011inspired instrumental \u201cCrashing Wave,\u201d the rhythm section locked into a percussive jam that invited call\u2011and\u2011response claps from the crowd. Between songs, the band joked about the Boise chill compared to Miami humidity, endearing themselves to the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time they closed with the infectious \u201cMaybe\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0You,\u201d the Cyclops plaza looked like a dance floor. Pump\u00a0Action\u2019s seamless blend of funk, rock and R&B; and their willingness to have fun with it, made their Treefort debut unforgettable.
