But as the girls gradually discover, their newfound abilities are due more to sinister and unseen hands than their schooling. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wonderful-content.com\/rodrigo-cortes\/\">Rodrigo Cortes<\/a>&#8216; adaptation of <a href=\"https:\/\/loisduncan.arquettes.com\/\">Lois Duncan<\/a>&#8216;s YA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0316098981\/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i3\">novel<\/a>\u00a0is long on Gothic atmosphere and production value, and benefits greatly from its cast, all of whom, while capable, are no match for Thurman, whose relish at playing such well-heeled malevolence is palpable; the script can&#8217;t tap into Duncan&#8217;s ability to craft young characters, and as such, takes a back seat to the mechanics (which include an impressive conflagration). Lionsgate&#8217;s Blu-ray includes an EPK-styled look at the making of the film, as well as an unfinished deleted scene and trailers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3212\" src=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dracula-1972-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dracula-1972-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dracula-1972-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dracula-1972-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Dracula-1972.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbshop.com\/products\/dracula-a-d-1972-bd\">Dracula A.D. 1972<\/a>&#8221; (1972, Warner Archives Collection) Resurrected by hippie libertines during a Black Mass, Dracula (C<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2015\/jun\/11\/christopher-lee-dies-at-the-age-of-93-dracula\">hristopher Lee<\/a>) ventures forth into 1970s London to wreak vengeance on Lorrimer Van Helsing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/lifeinfocus\/peter-cushing-actor-hammer-horror-frankenstein-star-wars-1984-sherlock-holmes-a8486566.html\">Peter Cushing<\/a>), a descendant of his old nemesis. Penultimate Hammer Film to feature Lee and Cushing as Prince of Darkness and Vampire Hunter, and the first to bring the characters into the modern day; the transition is not without its rough patches &#8211; the hippie Satanists, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmovie.com\/artist\/caroline-munro-p51346\">Caroline Munro<\/a>\u00a0among their number, are mostly woeful caricatures, and Don Houghton&#8217;s tongue-in-cheek script is loaded with lead \u2013 but the Lee\/Cushing team rises above any shortcomings, and there&#8217;s fine support by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmovie.com\/artist\/stephanie-beacham-p4730\">Stephanie Beacham<\/a>\u00a0as Van Helsing&#8217;s granddaughter and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christopher_Neame\">Christopher Neame<\/a>\u00a0as occult freak turned vampire acolyte Johnny Alucard. The soundtrack, too, is full of crate-digger pleasures, including two tracks and an on-screen appearance by Bay Area act <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bay-area-bands.com\/bab00020.htm\">Stoneground<\/a>\u00a0(led by former Beau Brummel\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.classicbands.com\/BeauBrummelsInterview.html\">Sal Valentino<\/a>) and a score by <a href=\"http:\/\/mikevickers.net\/a-potted-biography\/\">Mike Vickers<\/a>\u00a0(ex-Manfred Mann). Warner Archives&#8217; Blu-ray offers a stellar 2K restoration and the original theatrical trailer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3209\" src=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Absurd-260x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Absurd-260x300.jpg 260w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Absurd-768x888.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Absurd.jpg 886w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/severin-films.com\/shop\/absurd-bluray\/\">Absurd<\/a>&#8221; (1981, Severin Films) King-sized lunatic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0247642\/\">George Eastman<\/a>, who can regenerate his cells thanks to a joint church-and-science experiment, descends upon a suburban home for a gory game of cat-and-mouse with a disabled girl (Katya Berger, step-daughter of Eurowestern vet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaghetti-western.net\/index.php\/Category:William_Berger\">William Berger<\/a>) and her brother. A sequel of sorts to director <a href=\"https:\/\/thelosangelesbeat.com\/2018\/08\/movies-till-dawn-death-smiles-on-the-saturday-morning-strange\/\">Joe D&#8217;Amato<\/a>&#8216;s infamous cannibal thriller &#8220;Anthropophagus,&#8221; &#8220;Absurd&#8221; takes its cues from American slasher films of the period, with &#8220;Halloween&#8221; being the most obvious source (Eastman&#8217;s indestructibility, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmovie.com\/artist\/edmund-purdom-p107231\">Edmund Purdom<\/a>\u00a0as an ersatz Dr. Loomis), but jettisons even their bare-bones story structure in favor of a tide of gross-out scenes (characters are dispatched by drill and oven) and jump-out-and-boo shocks. Fans of &#8217;80s Continental horror are unquestionably the core audience for Severin&#8217;s lavishly restored Blu-ray, which offers both uncut English-language and shorter Italian version, along with interviews with Eastman (who rewrote the original script), director <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michele_Soavi\">Michele Soavi<\/a>\u00a0(who plays a biker in the film) and a vintage conversation with D&#8217;Amato. Severin also has a new Blu-ray of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/severin-films.com\/shop\/anthropophagous-bluray\/\">Anthropophagus<\/a>,&#8221; which features Eastman in a more monstrous version of a similar character and some genuinely unpleasant setpieces that earned it a place on the U.K.&#8217;s video nasties list.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3211\" src=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Scalpel-259x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Scalpel-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Scalpel-768x891.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theboisebeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Scalpel.jpg 883w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/mvdshop.com\/products\/scalpel-blu-ray\">Scalpel<\/a>&#8221; (1977, Arrow Video) Out-to-lunch medical horror with a stern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/10\/25\/obituaries\/robert-lansing-66-an-actor-on-stage-screen-and-television.html\">Robert Lansing<\/a>\u00a0as a deranged surgeon who, upon being excised from his father-in-law&#8217;s will, decides to circumvent the issue by transforming a badly injured dancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs.com\/shows\/the_young_and_the_restless\/cast\/61699\/\">Judith Chapman<\/a>) into a lookalike of the estate&#8217;s sole heir \u2013 a long-missing granddaughter. The scheme goes off the rails in somewhat spectacular fashion \u2013 as half-cocked, inherently moral-free plans often do \u2013 and if the denouement leaves rationality by the roadside, there is a degree of slow-boiling shivers to be found in the relationship between Lansing and Chapman, which grows incrementally more perverse as the pair embrace their false identities. Obscure &#8217;70s thriller benefits from better-than-average production values \u2013 there&#8217;s a swell, creepy score by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/artist\/725093-Robert-Cobert\">Robert Cobert<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;The Night Stalker&#8221;), the cast carries the picture over its rough patches, and the cinematography by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2018\/01\/todd-haynes-ed-lachman-collaboration-wonderstruck-cinematography-1201916147\/\">Edward Lachman<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;Wonderstruck&#8221;) has an unsettling patina of saturated decay \u2013 all of which are well showcased in Arrow&#8217;s Blu-ray presentation.
