\"Treefort<\/a>As the penultimate show of <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span> 2023\u2019s concerts, <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span> welcomes Duane Betts <\/span>and<\/span> Palmetto Motel to Boise\u2019s Olympic Venue on Sunday, March 26, 2023. <\/span>Duane brings a mix of music that he has written and performed on his own solo albums, as well as some songs made favorite by his father\u2019s and namesake\u2019s band, the Allman Brothers Band. Born into a musical family, Duane Betts fell in love with music early. Taking a route similar to many budding musicians, he tried playing several different instruments before settling on guitar as his primary form of expression. Of course, it helped that he had a talent for vocals and songwriting too. <\/span><\/p>\n

Developing his talents, he started performing early in his life. That included solo work, playing with his father\u2019s group Dickey Betts and Great Southern. <\/span>Duane Betts also has shared the stage with many top musicians, including Phil Lesh, Jack Johnson and Kid Rock.<\/span>He\u2019s also spent time in various tribute groups to the Allman Brothers Band, playing with other Allman siblings such as Derek Trucks, Berry Duane Oakley and Devon Allman. <\/span>Duane\u2019s solo albums include <\/span>Sketches of American Music<\/i><\/span>, a solo effort with tastes of rock, country and blues. The sessions were aided by veteran Steve Cropper (Booker T & the MG\u2019s, The Blues Brothers); and Marc Ford (the Black Crowes). Tours included stints with the Allman Betts Band, with Devon Allman and Berry D. Oakley; Devon Allman Project, with Gregg Allman\u2019s son; and also tour dates with his dad <\/span>D<\/span>ickey <\/span>Betts<\/span><\/a> and his band. <\/span><\/p>\n

Duane Betts sat down with <\/span>The Boise Beat<\/i><\/span> recently to talk over growing up as an Allman Brothers Band child, his journey into becoming a musician and what\u2019s happening these days as <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span> welcomes Duane Betts <\/span>and<\/span> Palmetto Motel to Boise\u2019s Olympic Venue <\/span>as part of their <\/span>Spring Vacancy Tour<\/i><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Hello, Duane. So what led you to follow a musical career?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A:<\/b><\/span> I guess I was always around music. It was something I was passionate about from a young age. I always wanted to play drums. <\/span>My dad always had guitars around; and he bought me a small ukulele when I was really young. It was kind of difficult for me, and I grew frustrated and told him that I wanted to play drums. Then I really got into playing drums and I played drums until I was twelve or thirteen as my main instrument; and then I switched to guitar, ironically, because I was so frustrated by it when I was so young. I came back around to it and began taking to it. <\/span><\/p>\n

I think it\u2019s pretty natural—<\/span>a lot of guitar players start out on drums. It\u2019s all intertwined—you\u2019ve got to have rhythm. So this is how it worked out! Once I started playing guitar, I was pretty hell-bent on being a guitar player and I had my heroes. So that was kind of the path; it wasn\u2019t a big deal really, I had the freedom to explore and develop at my own pace; and just have fun with it. It wasn\u2019t like a career decision necessarily, <\/span>it was just like \u201cthis is what I do\u201d. I\u2019m passionate about it, so hopefully I\u2019ll make a living doing this. <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/span>Blue Sky<\/i><\/span> seems to be<\/span> an important song to you. Why?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A:<\/b><\/span> Well, obviously it\u2019s a song my father wrote<\/span> and sing; and it\u2019s just a beautiful song. I love the song and its got a beautiful melody, beautiful lyrics, beautiful sentiment; and it really has a great instrumental section in it to just kind of flow. <\/span>It flows like a river and it\u2019s just beautiful musically and lyrically and melodically. Other than that, anybody can relate to it. My dad wrote it for his third wife, Sandy Blue Sky, so that\u2019s who it was written for, but it can be applied to anybody. <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span><\/a> is certainly a very special music festival for Boise and the Pacific North West. Are you happy to be a featured performer here?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A: <\/span><\/b>Yes, I\u2019m really happy to be back in Boise and be part of <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span> this year. I\u2019ve had a lot of good experiences in Boise through the years. <\/span>I always love passing through town and playing. I\u2019m a part time resident of this region, because I live in Jackson Hole [WY] part time. So it\u2019s not too far, because you can drive there!<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Tell me a story from the road\u2026..<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A:<\/span><\/b> Well, the first time I sat in with the Allman Brothers Band was in Vail, Colorado; and that was a pretty major achievement for me, being that I was fifteen years old and had never played with the band; and I was up there in the spotlight playing a guitar solo. I actually forgot my guitar at the hotel on purpose, because I was so nervous to play; and of course when we got on the bus my dad asked if I <\/span>was ready to sit in with the band as planned, because we had talked about it<\/span>. <\/span>I said \u201cOh man, I left my guitar at the hotel\u201d; and he said \u201cThat\u2019s OK, we\u2019ve got plenty of guitars, you don\u2019t need that guitar\u201d. I thought, \u2018Oh man, why didn\u2019t I think of that\u2019. So inevitably, I sat in and it went off without a hitch!<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Tell me about Duane Betts and Palmetto Motel. Who is in the band playing at the Olympic for <\/span>Treefort<\/i><\/span>?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\"Treefort<\/a>A:<\/span><\/b> The group of musicians I have on this tour\u2026..I have Johnny Sta<\/span>che<\/span>la, who is my guitar partner and is pretty much always with me. We played in the Allman Betts Band together. Then I have Pedro Ar<\/span>av<\/span>olo on bass and vocal. He is from the Dickey Betts Band; my dad\u2019s band. We played together for the better part of a decade I\u2019d say. Then on drums we have Vince Fossett Jr. <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: So it sounds like you\u2019ve got a good mix of people you\u2019re working with\u2026..<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A:<\/span><\/b> Yes. Where I\u2019m at now, the lineup can change a little from tour to tour depending on who\u2019s available. And that\u2019s what\u2019s cool about it—<\/span> you get to play with different people, but I want to get it to where it\u2019s a consistent lineup every time. It\u2019s Johnny and me pretty much all the time; and Berry Duane Oakley\u2019s with us a lot of the time. <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Your dad was obviously a big influence on your m<\/span>u<\/span>s<\/span>i<\/span>cal style, as well as your life. Any thoughts about him?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A:<\/span><\/b> My dad has always been a constant source of inspiration for me. <\/span>He\u2019s one of my best friends. I have a lot of influences and a lot of artists I look up to and guitar players that I look up to; and he\u2019s my dad, so he\u2019s right in there; and he\u2019s probably right at the top of all of them. I learned a lot from him. We enjoy hanging out. Watching westerns together, chilling out now in his older age. It\u2019s still fun to hang out with him. <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Can you tell me about the song <\/span>Juliette<\/i><\/span>?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A: <\/b><\/span>Juliette<\/i><\/span> is an unreleased song, actually, but I\u2019ve played it live a few times. It\u2019s a song I wrote with my friend Stoll Vaughan. It\u2019s inspired about—Juliette\u2019s a town in Georgia. My family and I used to drive up <\/span>there <\/span>from Florida. <\/span>I used to remember waking up in Georgia and it would be totally different than the part of Florida we were in. We were in the lower half of the state of Florida, so the weather would be different, everything would be different, the dirt would be different, the trees would be different. We\u2019d camp out, go fishing, my dad might do some bow hunting or something. It was always a beautiful place, a place my dad loves. It\u2019s a beautiful name too, so it doubles like you\u2019re talking about a girl. That was the inspiration behind writing <\/span>Juliette<\/i><\/span>. I\u2019<\/span>m really excited about releasing my <\/span>new record that will be out later this summer. <\/span>I recorded it at <\/span>Swamp Raga<\/i><\/span><\/a>, which is a big deal, because it is Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi\u2019s studio. It\u2019s a big deal because they\u2019re amazing!<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: One other song that caught me because its got a great riff is <\/span>Downtown Runaround<\/i><\/span>. Can you tell me about that?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A:<\/b><\/span> Oh yeah, <\/span>Downtown Runaround!<\/i><\/span> That\u2019s song\u2019s riff I came up with when I was jamming in my friend\u2019s studio in Long Beach. That\u2019s where it was recorded too, at the <\/span>Compound<\/i><\/span> in Long Beach. I just came up with that riff and then I wrote the words with my friend Stoll Vaughan again. I write a lot of stuff with Stoll. <\/span>Downtown Runaround<\/i><\/span> is a riff I came up with, a fun song, a kind of tongue-in-cheek song. It\u2019s a song about getting into trouble. You keep getting into trouble, no matter what you do! That\u2019s what the song\u2019s about. I like that one, it\u2019s a fun song to play! <\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Any last thoughts, Duane?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

A: <\/b>I\u2019m just looking forward to seeing everyone and playing some really good music. Seeing some smiling faces! We can\u2019t wait to see everybody. Bring a friend!<\/span><\/p>\n
