Tab Benoit has long been acknowledged as one of the top blues guitarists around. Bringing his Louisiana background to his music, he keeps his music moving, combining his powerful voice with tasty, down-home guitar licks. Coming to Boise just after an outstanding performance at the Holy Grail of blues shows, Las Vegas’ Big Blues Bender, Tab Benoit’s upcoming visit to Boise will be at the Egyptian Theater on Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Opening for Tab, J.D. Simo, originally from Chicago and now based in Nashville, will bring his show, dedicated to “keeping music real, raw and honest”. J.D. Simo has worked with artists such as Jack White, Dave Cobb, Tommy Emanuel, Luther Dickinson and the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh’s group Phil Lesh & Friends.
Having seen Tab Benoit before, he can really work an audience, bringing his bayou-inflected guitar and vocals to a wide audience. His guitar that has been with him forever, a stock, 1972 Fender Telecaster Thinline, is battle-scarred, but delivers notes that sound distinctive, sweet and also gutsy. He doesn’t us any effects electronics, relying strictly on his amp and fingers to create his music. After over 3 decades of performance, he still returns to his hometown of Houma, Louisiana to play the occasional show. Tab is also featured in the recent Sony Pictures Classics movie JazzFest: A New Orleans Story, Frank Marshall & Ryan Suffern’s documentary on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival; and was inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists in 2020.
