Rudy Love Jr. and his band paid tribute to his father’s musical legacy while carving out their own sound of soul, funk and rock.

Some of Treefort’s most moving moments come from artists who carry the weight of history. Wichita‑based Rudy Love & The Encore do just that, performing under a name that honors singer and soul legend Rudy Love Sr. Led by Rudy Love Jr. (vocals/keys) alongside drummer Marrque Nunley and vocalist Mariel Jacoda, the group formed in early 2023 to carry forward the Love family’s musical spirit. Additional members; percussionist Rachelle Love, bassist Sherdeill “DJ” Breathett and guitarist Willy Simms; round out the ensemble, creating a lush, multi‑layered sound.

The band released their debut EP The Beauty of Burdens in 2023 and quickly followed with singles “Broken Angel” and “Grey,” which blend elements of gospel, funk and rock. They’ve since collaborated with drummer/vocalist Elise Trouw and opened for artists ranging from Teddy Swims to The B‑52’s. Moving from Los Angeles back to Kansas allowed them to reconnect with family roots, and their music radiates that sense of home.

At Treefort, their set at Cyclops and a separate evening show at the Basque Center were soulful celebrations. Rudy Jr. switched between piano and vintage synths, his voice alternately tender and powerful. The band delivered tight funk grooves on “All Mine,” gospel‑tinged harmonies on “Broken Angel” and psychedelic rock textures on “Grey.” Between songs, Love shared stories about growing up with a legendary father and the importance of honoring elders. When they closed with a medley of Rudy Sr.’s hits, a few audience members wiped away tears.

Rudy Love & The Encore’s Treefort performances reminded us that festivals can be spaces for both remembrance and renewal. By bridging a family legacy through a contemporary lens, they forged a connection that transcended generations and genres.
